Curtiss F11C/BF2C Goshawk

Introduction
The Curtiss F11C Goshawk was a 1930’s biplane that served with the United States Navy. Though it only saw limited successes, it was part of a long line of Curtiss ‘Hawk’ aircraft, built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company for the United States military.

Development
In April of 1932, when the Curtiss Company was planning the Model 35B, the United States Navy contracted with Curtiss for an improved version of the Model 34C, or F6C, as the F11C. Several changes were made, including the use of the 600hp Wright R-1510-98 radial engine, single-leg cantilever main undercarriage units, and a slight increase in interplane gap, metal covered control surfaces (as opposed to fabric), and an armament of two 7.62mm Browning machine guns and a hardpoint under the fuselage for a 474lb bomb or a drop tank.
Curtiss designed the aircraft, designated by the company as the Model 64 ‘Goshawk’, while the USN designated it XF11C-1. The aircraft was made of fabric-covered metal framing, and had the wing cell structure of the YP-23, and was delivered in September of 1932.
Before ordering the XF11C-1, the USN had bought a company-owned Model 64A demonstrator, with a Wright R-1820-78 Cyclone, slightly longer main undercarriage legs, and wheels that had low pressure tires, a tailwheel instead of a tailskid, fabric-covered tail control surfaces, and provision for underwing racks for light bombs in addition to the fuselage hardpoint. Flight trials of this XF11C-2 showed a need for some minor changes, and it was regarded as the prototype for the F11C-2, twenty-eight of these being ordered as fighter-bombers (or as the Navy would have it, bomber-fighters) on October 18, 1932. Deliveries began the following February, and were completed in May of 1933.
From March 1934 onwards, the aircraft was revised with a semi-enclosed cockpit and several other modifications before it was designated BFC-2 (BF standing for Bomber-Fighter). The last aircraft in the XF11C-2 contract was converted into the XF11C-3, with the more powerful Wright R-1820-80 engine, and a hand-cranked retractable landing gear.

Operational History
The only USN units to operate the F11C were VF-1B and VB-6. VF-1B, the famous “High Hat Squadron” was assigned to the USS Saratoga. In March of 1934, when F11C’s were renamed BFC’s, they were renumbered as VB-2B, and subsequently as VB-3B, and used BFC-2’s until February of 1938. VB-6 never actually embarked on their carrier, the USS Enterprise, while using BFC aircraft.
The F11C produced several export versions, known as Hawk I, Hawk II, and Hawk III. The Hawk II, basically a modified XF11C-2, was fitted with a 710hp Wright R-1820F-3 Cyclone radial engine, and carried 94 gallons of fuel, while the Hawk I only carried 50 gallons. Both carried the same armament as the F11C-2. The Hawk II was exported in quantity to Turkey, the first customer who ordered 19 on August 30, 1932. Columbia ordered theirs in October of the same year, also receiving twenty-six versions with twin-floats. The Columbian’s used their Hawk II’s and float-equipped F11C-2’s in the Columbia-Peru War, 1932-33. Nine Hawk II’s were sold to Bolivia, three of which could change between wheels and floats. Four aircraft were sold to Chile, fifty-two to China, four to Cuba, two to Germany, and one to Norway. Twelve were also sold to Thailand, who also obtained a license and built fifty of them locally, designating them as Fighter Type 10.

Kawasaki Ki-10 "Perry"

Kawasaki Ki-10-I "Perry"

Introduction
The Kawasaki Ki-10 (or the Army Type 95 Fighter) was the best and last biplane fighter to serve in the Imperial Japanese Army. It was very maneuverable, and had a big influence on newer monoplane designs. It was built by the Kawasaki Kokuki Kogyo KK, and saw combat in Manchuria and China. The Allied code-name was “Perry”.

Design and Development
The Ki-10 was designed by Takeo Doi, who was the chief designer for Kawasaki. The design was made in response to a requirement issued by the IJA for a new fighter, which was to be equal in performance to that of the Hawker Fury and Boeing P-26 Peashooter. Kawasaki’s first design, an inverted gull-wing monoplane designated Ki-5, was rejected due to a lack of maneuverability. The IJA then ordered Kawasaki to design a high-performance biplane, leading to the design by Takeo Doi.
The Ki-10 was entered into a competition with the Nakajima Ki-11. Powered by a Kawasaki Ha-9-IIa and driving a two-bladed wooden propeller, the Nakajima design was faster. However, the Ki-10 won in maneuverability hands down, and it was accepted over the Ki-11.
The Ki-10 was a sesquiplane (wings of different lengths) design, the wings being braced by struts, and the ailerons only on the upper set of wings. The structure was all-metal and covered with fabric. The armament consisted of two 7.7mm Type 89 machine guns, which were synchronized to fire through the propeller. To increase the speed on the production aircraft, a three-bladed, metal propeller was used, along with flush-head rivets. Production of the Ki-10 began in 1935.
Several variants of the Ki-10 were made. The first production model was the Ki-10-I. Three hundred Ki-10-I’s were built between December 1935 and October 1937. In an attempt to clean up the Ki-10-I, a new version designated Ki-10-I Kai was produced from April till October 1936. This model had a new, low-drag, cantilever undercarriage installed. It also moved the radiator back to a new position between the undercarriage legs. The same engine was used, but the top speed was increased by 12.5mph.
The Ki-10-II was developed while the Ki-10-I was produced. It boasted a longer fuselage and larger wings, and was noticeably more stable. It was ordered into production as the Army Type 95 Model 2. 280 were built between June 1937 and December of 1938. Two Ki-10-II Kai’s were produced by converting two Ki-10-II’s to Ki-10-I Kai’s. They differed in the engine, the Ki-10-II Kai having the Kawasaki Ha-9-IIb, capable of short bursts of 950hp at 12,470ft.

Operational History
The Ki-10 was deployed in Formosa, Korea, Manchuria, and in the beginning campaigns of the Second Sino-Japanese War. An excellent dogfighter, it proved to be capable of taking on many aircraft employed in the Chinese Air Force. But by the time of the Nomonhan Incident with the Soviets (the Battles of Khalkhin Gol), it was largely obsolete.
At the beginning of World War II in the Pacific, the Ki-10 was moved back to training and second-line missions. It was returned to front-line services in January and February 1942, flying short-range patrol and reconnaissance missions in Japan and China. American Intelligence mistakenly believed that it was still in front-line service, and gave it the code-name “Perry”. However, the type was encountered only occasionally over China.

Mitsubishi A5M 'Claude'

Introduction
The Mitsubishi A5M was a Japanese carrier-based aircraft. The Imperial Japanese Navy’s official designation was Type 96 Carrier-Based Fighter. The A5M was the first monoplane shipboard fighter in the world, and was the direct ancestor of the famous Mitsubishi A6M Zero. The Allied code-name for the A5M was ‘Claude’.

Design and Development
In 1934, the IJN issued their 9-Shi specification for an advanced fighter with a maximum speed of 220mph at 10,000ft, ability to climb to 16,500ft in 6.5min, and excellent maneuverability. Both Mitsubishi and Nakajima produced designs. Mitsubishi’s submission was designed by the team led by Jiro Horikoshi, the man who later designed the A6M. The design was designated Ka-14 by Mitsubishi.
To save on weight, a fixed undercarriage was used, housed in streamlined fairings. The fuselage was of a tubular shape, and covered in flush-riveted aluminum skin, with a small cross-section. The tail section was conventional, with the applicable tail surfaces. The wings were low-fitted to the front of the aircraft, and had rounded wingtips. The first prototype had inverted gull type wings. The pilot sat well forward, just aft of the engine housing. It had an opened-cockpit, with a windscreen to the front and a raised fuselage-spine to the rear. Armament consisted of two 7.7mm Type 97 Machine Guns mounted in the fuselage.
The first prototype was powered by a Nakajima Kotobuki 5 radial engine, and flew on February 4, 1935. It far exceeded the requirements, reaching speeds of 279mph. The second prototype, which did not have the gulled wings and had other various changes for better maneuverability and reduced drag, was ordered into production as the A5M.
Since the Ka-14 gave excellent performance, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force showed interest, and ordered a single prototype designated as the Ki-18. It was much faster than the current IJAAF fighter, the Kawasaki Ki-10, but was rejected because the Ki-10 was more maneuverable. The IJAAF then issued a specification for an advanced fighter to replace the Ki-10. Mitsubishi, busy with the A5M for the navy, gave a prototype with very few changes, designated as the Ki-33. However, it was defeated by Nakajima, who got the contract for the Ki-27.
A trainer version, the A5M4-K, was developed, and 103 produced. It had a two-seat cockpit, and was used for fighter training well after the A5M left front-line service.

Operational History
The Mitsubishi A5M entered service in 1937, and saw action during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The A5M participated in some of the first ever dogfights between monoplanes when it fought with Chinese Boeing P-26C Peashooters. The A5M was better than any aircraft that the Chinese could put into the air, except for the Polikarpov I-16, flown by Russian volunteers.
Mitsubishi continued to improve the design. A closed cockpit was tried, but it was disliked by pilots. The final variant put into production was the A5M4, which had provision for a ventral drop tank.
The A5M was very effective and damage tolerant. Its main duties in the Second Sino-Japanese War was escorting Mitsubishi G3M bombers in raids which almost destroyed the Chinese Nationalist Air Force, and saw many fierce battles. For example, on April 29, 1938, 27 A5M’s escorted 10 G3M’s on a raid, and were intercepted by 67 I-16’s. Both sides claim victory in the battle. The Chinese and Soviets claimed 11 A5M’s and 10 G3M’s destroyed; the Japanese only admit two of each lost, while claiming 40 I-16’s! A5M’s continued to see action into the 1940’s. The American Volunteer Group unofficially encountered a few, and one was shot down over Mingaladon Airfield, Burma, on January 29, 1942.
A5M’s saw a small amount of service after December 7, 1941 in Malaya and the East Indies. United States intelligence mistakenly believed that it was still the primary fighter of the IJN, but it really had been replaced by the A6M by that time. The last official combat action of the A5M was in the Battle of the Coral Sea, on May 7, 1942, when two A5M’s and four A6M’s unsuccessfully defended the light carrier Shoho against attacking US Navy Aircraft. Most A5M’s were put into training services after they were removed from front-line units. Some A5M’s were used for kamikaze attacks in the closing months of the war.

In all, A5M’s saw service on the Imperial Japanese Carriers Akagi, Hosho, Kaga, Ryujo, Shoho, Soryu, and Zuiho, and several land-based naval squadrons.

There were several pilots who became aces in the A5M, with Lieutenant Tetsuzo scoring fourteen kills to become the top-scoring A5M ace.

Boeing P-26 Peashooter

The Boeing P-26 Peashooter

Introduction
The Boeing P-26 Peashooter was the first all-metal fighter and first monoplane fighter produced for the United States Army Air Corps. The prototype first flew in 1932, and the type remained in service as late as 1941, in the Philippines.

Development
In April of 1931, Boeing completed the B-9 bomber for the United States Army Air Corps. This twin-engine design was the fastest bomber in the world – too fast. No fighter in service with the USAAC was fast enough to intercept the B-9. Many observers felt that the day of the fighter was at an end. However, Boeing was confident that they could produce a fighter which was capable of combating the B-9.
Boeing funded the project and produced the Boeing Model 248 in September 1931, with the USAAC providing the engine and instruments. This design had an open cockpit, fixed landing gear, and externally braced wings. The type first flew on March 20, 1932. Due to its high landing speed, there were several accidents later on, and it was fitted with landing flaps to reduce the landing speed. The USAAC contracted three prototypes, given the designation of XP-936.
Despite the new flaps, the aircraft was still tricky to land, and occasionally would flip forwards and end up on its back because of the short nose. With nothing but an unarmored headrest, the pilots had virtually no protection, and there were several injuries. Production model P-26A’s fitted a larger headrest.
The Boeing P-26
The USAAC ordered 111 production P-26’s on January 11, 1933. The number was later increased to 136. This order was the largest single contract for aircraft since 1921. Deliveries began in December of 1933. Two aircraft were completed as P-26B’s, powered by a fuel-injected Pratt & Whitney R-1340-33 radial. Production P-26C’s had a carbureted model of the same engine, and a modified fuel system. Twelve Model 281 export versions of the P-26C’s were built, one sent to Spain, and eleven to China. The Chinese P-26’s were partially funded by Chinese Americans, and many Chinese restaurants in the US would place donation boxes on their counters.
The P-26 Peashooter was faster than any previous American fighters by 27mph, despite the fact that several of its features were outdated in its time. In 1935, both the Messerschmitt Bf-109 and Hawker Hurricane, featuring enclosed cockpits, a retractable landing gear, and monocoque wings were flown. However, the P-26 was easy to fly, and a good aircraft, and remained in service into WWII.

Operational History
Deliveries of the P-26 began in December of 1933, and production ended in 1936. Twenty-two US squadrons used the type, and it was the front-line fighter of the USAAC until 1938. A total of twenty P-26’s were lost due to accidents between 1934 and the beginning of World War II.
In 1935, the 17th Pursuit Group became the 17th Attack Group, and in 1938 their P-26’s were transferred to the 16th Pursuit Group at Albrook Field, Panama Canal Zone. In 1940, those P-26’s were given to the 37th Pursuit Group, who flew them until May of 1941. Some P-26’s remained in service with the 32nd Pursuit Group, but only nine were operational in Central America when World War II began. Between 1938 and 1940, several P-26’s were sent to Wheeler Field, Hawaii, to supplement the P-35’s there. They were also used by the 3rd Pursuit Group, based in the Philippines, and between 1937 and 1941, thirty-one of them were sold to the Philippine Army Air Corps.

The P-26’s first combat debut was actually made with the Chinese Air Force. On August 15, 1937, eight Chinese P-26’s based in Chuyung attacked twenty Mitsubishi G3M2 medium bombers from the Kisarazu Air Group, who had been sent to bomb the Nanking Aerodrome. The Chinese aircraft contributed four kills, while taking no losses. Eventually, engagements between Chinese P-26’s and Japanese A5M ‘Claude’ aircraft became the first aerial dogfights and kills between two monoplane fighters.
The single P-26 serving with the Spanish Republican Air Force during the Spanish Civil war had no combat victories, and was shot down in 1936.
After Pearl Harbor, nine P-26’s were left in the Panama Canal Zone. In 1942-43, Vuerza Aerea de Guatemala obtained seven P-26’s from the US Government by smuggling them in as Boeing “PT-26A” trainers, so as to get around the restrictions. The last two P-26’s flying with Guatemala were retired in 1956, after being replaced by P-51’s. Their last combat operations was in 1954, during a coup.

The Boeing P-26 Peashooter was the last fighter built by Boeing, until the Boeing company was acquired by McDonnell-Douglas, with the production and support contracts for the F/A-18 E and F Super Hornet in 2002.

Gloster Gladiator

Introduction
The Gloster Gladiator was the last British biplane fighter. It was used by the Royal Air Force and the Fleet Air Arm, and exported to many countries. Being a biplane, it was obsolete even before it was introduced. The Gladiator saw action in almost all the theaters, including the China-Burma-India theater, Europe at the start of World War II, the Balkans, Malta, North Africa, and East Africa.

Development
The RAF issued Specification F.7/30 in 1930, calling for a fighter with a top speed of at least 250mph, and armament of four machine guns. The recommended engine was the Rolls-Royce Goshawk steam-cooled engine, which most designers used. This engine proved to be unreliable, and most of the competitor’s airplanes failed as a result. This did buy some time for the specification to be met by Gloster.
When the specification was issued, Gloster was working on the Gauntlet biplane. After most others failed, it was decided to redesign the Gauntlet to meet the specification. The wings were changed to a single-bay (as opposed to twin-bay), and the undercarriage was replaced with a cantilever one with internally-sprung wheels. The new aircraft, designated SS.37, first flew on September 12, 1934, with a 530hp Bristol Mercury VIS 9-cylinder radial engine. With a newer version of the Mercury, it reached speeds of 242mph while carrying four guns. On April 3, 1935, the RAF evaluated the aircraft while Gloster continued improving the machine – giving it an 830hp Mercury IX and a fully enclosed cockpit. Three months later, the first order of twenty-three aircraft came, along with a name – Gladiator.
The first version, the Mk I, became operational in January 1937. It was followed by the Mk II which sported a more powerful Mercury engine and a fixed-pitch, three-blade metal propeller, rather than the twin-bladed wooden one of the Mk I. The Fleet Air Arm also decided to use the Gladiator as a replacement of the Hawker Nimrod, and ninety-eight Gladiator Mk II’s were modified into Sea Gladiators, having arrester hooks and dinghy stowage.
The Gladiator was the last British biplane fighter, and the first British fighter with a fully enclosed cockpit. Its top speed was around 257mph. It was outclassed by newer monoplanes before it was introduced. A total of 747 were built (486 for the RAF, 98 for the FAA, and 216 for export). They were sold to Belgium, China, Egypt, Finland, France, Greece, Iraq, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, and Sweden.

Operational History
By September 1939, the Gladiator was mostly relegated to duties in the background, replaced in the front-line services by the Hurricane and Spitfire. However, two squadrons were used in the Norwegian and French campaigns. The aircraft also did well in Finland during the Winter War on the Soviets. In most other theaters, it was outclassed by German fighters. However Sea Gladiators operating from carriers were more successful. The slower speeds of the biplane made it better for carrier operations, and it was also less likely to be opposed by more modern fighters. The Gladiator also did well in the Mediterranean against Italy.

China
In October of 1937, China ordered thirty-six Gladiator Mk I’s. By February of 1938, Chinese pilots were starting to familiarize themselves in the aircraft. On February 24, an A5M Claude was shot down near Nanking, the first Gladiator kill. The pilot was Captain John Wong Sun-Shui, a Chinese-Amercian. He is believed to have shot down two aircraft, as two wrecks were found. This was done for a loss of two Gladiators. There were several more victories over Japanese aircraft between 1938-40, and it was considered an excellent fighter. However, the A5M was a bit better, and due to a lack of spares they were eventually relegated to training. By the time the A6M Zero entered the theater, the Gladiator was obsolete. John Wong, the first Gladiator ace and first American ace of the Second World War was shot down on March 14, 1941, and died two days later. He was among the fifteen Chinese-Americans who formed the original group of American volunteers in China.

Finland
During the Winter War in Finland, thirty Gladiator Mk II’s were in service with the Finnish Air Force. Twenty had been bought, and ten were donated by the British. All had been delivered between January and February 1940. They served until 1945, though in the Continuation War they were outclassed by Soviet fighters, and were mainly used for reconnaissance. They did do well, getting 45 kills by 22 pilots in the Winter War, and one in the Continuation War. Twelve were lost in combat during the Winter War, compared to three in the Continuation War. There were two aces.

Norway
Both Norway and Britain used Gladiators against Germany in Norway. Pilots of the Norwegian Jagevingen (fighter flight) at Fornebu Airport flew seven aircraft on April 9, and shot down two Bf-110’s, two He-111’s, and one Ju-52 filled with Fallschirmjager (paratroopers). One Gladiator was shot down by ace Helmut Lent, and two were destroyed on the ground. The other four landed on frozen lakes around Oslo. They were later wrecked by civilians looking for a souvenir.
British No. 263 Squadron came to Norway aboard HMS Glorious on April 24, and operated from the frozen Lake Lesjaskogsvatnet in central-southern Norway. Within a week, all of the aircraft were unserviceable, and the squadron was evacuated. They were re-eqipped and returned to northern Norway on May 21, flying from Bardufoss airfield near Narvik. No. 46 Squadron also was operational there with Hurricanes. The Gladiators defended fleet anchorage over Narvik and the island of Hinnøya. They were only in action for a short time, and were ordered to prepare for evacuation on June 2. For twelve days, they had flown 249 sorties and shot down 26 airplanes. The remaining ten aircraft landed on HMS Glorious on June 7, and sailed for home. However, the ship was intercepted and sunk by the German battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst.

Battle of Britain
Gladiators operated with No. 247 Squadron at Roborough, Devon. They did not see much action. No. 239 Squadron and No. 804 Naval Air Squadron were also operational with Gladiators and Sea Gladiators.

Malta
The best-known campaign involving Gladiators was the siege of Malta in 1940. No. 802 Naval Air Squadron had been dropped off by HMS Glorious in early 1940. Later, they were shipped up to Norway, and three airplanes were sent to Egypt. By April, Malta was in desperate need of fighters and made up a flight of Gladiators at RAF Hal Far, composed of RAF and FAA personnel. Several crated Sea Gladiators were built and tested, and became a sought after commodity. It was this flight that formed the myth of three Gladiators named Faith, Hope, and Charity, though they weren't given the names until after they were retired.
The Italians could have destroyed Malta, but the Gladiators did win several engagements. Usually they would dive onto the SM.79 bombers before the escorting CR.42 biplanes or MC.200 monoplanes could react. On June 11, 1940, the Gladiators damaged a CR.42, and on June 23 they were victorious over several SM.79’s and three CR.42’s. One Gladiator shot down an MC.200, which outclassed the Gladiator. Another pilot shot down two SM.79’s and two CR.42’s, and claimed an MC.200 on June 11 and another SM.79 damaged. Even though the Regia Aeronautica had the numerical advantage, the Gladiators held them off until Hurricanes could be brought to the island.
Sea Gladiator on Malta - Faith

North Africa
The main opponent of the Gladiator in North Africa was the Fiat CR.42 Falco. It was a superior aircraft, but the pilots were not always superior. On June 14, Tenente Franco Lucchini of 90a Squadrigglia, 10° Gruppo, 4° Stormo, flying a CR.42 from Tobruk, shot down a Gladiator over Amseat – the first claim against the RAF in the desert. On the afternoon of July 24, CR.42’s and Gladiators fought over Bardia. Eleven CR.42’s from 10° Gruppo and six from 13° Gruppo attacked nine Blenheim’s which were bombing Bardia. They were, in turn, attacked by fifteen Gladiators. No. 33 Squadron claimed four CR.42’s.
On August 4, 1940, CR.42’s from 160a Squadrigglia intercepted four Gladiators commanded by Marmaduke Pattle, which were attacking Breda Ba.65’s. The Fiats had surprised the Gladiators, and destroyed three. on August 8, fourteen Gladiators of No. 80 Squadron jumped a group of CR.42’s from 9° and 10° Gruppi of 4° Stormo (an elite group) over Gabr Saleh. The British shot down 13-16 confirmed, and 1-7 probable to the loss of two. One of the strongpoint’s of the Gladiator over the CR.42 was radio equipment, which helped coordinate attacks. From 1941 onwards, monoplanes started replacing biplanes on both sides in front line operations.

Eastern Africa
Gladiators faced CR.32’s and CR.42’s in Eastern Africa. On November 6, 1940, CR.42’s of 412a Squadrigglia shot down five Gladiators without loss. However, by June of 1941 the Regia Aeronautica had only two flyable aircraft – one CR.32 and one CR.42 – and the British Gladiators and Hurricanes had complete superiority. The last combat in the Eastern Africa Theater was on October 24, 1941, when a CR.42 flown by Tenente Malavoti flew to strafe airfields at Dabat and Adi Arcai. Italian sources have it that he was intercepted by three Gladiators, shooting down two and being shot down by the third. English sources say that Lieutenant Lancelot Charles Henry “Paddy” Hope of the South African Air Force scrambled from Dabat, intercepted and dove on the CR.42. The Italian took evasive action, but Hope followed, closed to within 20 yards, and fired, and the CR.42 spun in near Ambazzo. Wreckage was found the following day. Hope dropped a message on the Italians at Ambazzo – “Tribute to pilot of the Fiat. He was a brave man. South African Air Force.” English sources do not have any record of two downed Gladiators.

Greece
Ever since April 1939, when Italy occupied Albania, Greece and Italy had tensions building. Italy gave Greece an ultimatum on October 27, 1940, which was refused, and Italy then invaded.
Britain sent No. 80 Squadron to Trikkala, and on November 19 some Gladiators intercepted five CR.42’s and shot down four. On November 27, seven Gladiators attacked three Falco’s, and shot down the leader. On November 28 four Gladiators were shot down along with three Falco’s. On December 3, elements of No. 112 Squadron arrived in Greece. The next day, twenty Gladiators fought ten CR.42’s with the loss of three Gladiators and two CR.42’s. On December 21, twenty Gladiators intercepted fifteen CR.42’s and shot down two for the loss of two. Over the next few days, several SM.79’s and SM.81’s were shot down by Gladiators.
No. 112 Squadron moved to Eleusis in January 1941, and by the end of February they received No. 80 Squadrons Gladiators. On April 5, when Germany invaded Greece, they took domination of the skies. Gladiators flew cover missions before evacuating to Crete. No. 112 Squadron claimed a few twin-engine aircraft before evacuating to Egypt during the Battle of Crete.

Anglo-Iraqi War
The Royal Iraqi Air Force was trained and equipped by the British, and in 1941 No. 4 Squadron was equipped with seven operational Gladiators at Rashid. After an RAF attack on blockading Iraqi forces, Iraqi Gladiators strafed RAF Habbaniya on May 2. The sole Gladiator vs. Gladiator kill was on May 5, when Pilot Officer Watson shot down an Iraqi Gladiator over Baqubah. Much of the Iraqi air force was destroyed, but they kept flying Gladiators until the end of the war. The Anglo-Iraqi war was the only war in which Gladiators fought for both sides of the conflict.

Syria
Following the war in Iraq, the British decided to invade Syria, controlled by the Vichy-French, before the Germans took complete control. The French had supported the Iraqi rebellion, and had allowed Luftwaffe aircraft to use their airfields. The month-long campaign saw heavy fighting until the Vichy French surrendered. On June 15, six Gladiators had been jumped by six Dewoitine D.520 monoplanes – the best that the French possessed. Both sides lost one aircraft shot down and one damaged.

Other Forces
Belgium had fifteen Gladiators in their Air Force in May of 1940, and all were lost to the Luftwaffe that month. Two Irish Gladiators were scrambled to intercept a Ju-88 reconnaissance aircraft over Dublin, but no contact was made. Irish Gladiators did shoot down several British barrage balloons that had broken loose from their moorings. The RAF used Gladiators for meteorological work and other non-combat tasks later in the war.
The Luftwaffe used captured Gladiators as glider tugs with Erganzungsgruppe 1 from Langendiebach near Hanau from 1942-43.

Aces
The top-scoring Gladiator aces flew in North Africa and Greece. Flight Lieutenant Marmaduke T “Pat” St. Pattle, a South African in RAF No. 80 Squadron, had 15.5 of his 50+ kills in Gladiators, plus four probable and six damaged. The second place man was Pilot Officer Bill “Cherry” W. Vale of No. 33 and No. 80 Squadrons shot down 7.5, one probable, and 1.5 damaged in Gladiators.
